Starting the day ranked fourth in the NCAC, the Ladies looked to avenge an earlier loss to the Gators and restart their winning ways, a task they achieved, winning 59-51.
The Ladies came out strong in their first match, taking an early lead by putting on a tenacious defensive effort. Their efforts proved fruitful as at the end of the first half the Ladies held a 28-22 lead over the Gators.
Coming out after halftime, the Ladies returned to their dominant ways and opened up a 12-point lead with 12 minutes left in the second half. It looked as though they would cruise to their 12th win of the season until the Gators came roaring back, and with just two minutes to go the 12-point lead had evaporated, replaced by a 44-44 stalemate. Following a Kenyon timeout, the Ladies took a 46-44 lead. But with 28 seconds remaining in the game, Allegheny answered the threat by tying the score. The Ladies had a chance to take the game but failed, sending the game into overtime.
Blowing a 12-point lead would be difficult for any team to handle, but the Ladies seemed unperturbed coming out for the overtime period with resilience, outscoring the Gators 13-5. As the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard blinked a 59-51 Kenyon victory. "I thought everyone contributed," co-captain Laura Goehrke '10 said. "It was a great team win,". "We had a lot of energy on and off the court. [In overtime] we were really focused - you could tell because we shut their offense down completely in overtime with our stellar defense." Individual standout performers for the game included Kathleen Williams '11, who had 14 points and ten rebounds, and Morgan Korinek '12, who had 24 points and 12 rebounds. For her performance this past week, Korinek was named NCAC Player of the Week.
Following their exciting overtime win at home, the Ladies took on the College of Wooster at home this past Tuesday, Feb. 2. The game looked to be in the Scots' favor as they led 16-11 with seven minutes left in the first half, but a determined Ladies team returned with a 15-0 run to take a 26-16 lead. Ultimately, the Ladies entered halftime with a tentative 26-21 lead. At the beginning of the second half, the Ladies returned with a similar intensity and in the end, their stifling defense was just too much for the Scots to handle as the Ladies won their second in a row with a score of 55-42. This game's standout performer was co-captain Laurel Stokes '10, who ended with a team high of 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
The Ladies will next suit up this Friday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. when they visit Oberlin College. "Oberlin is not a very good team, but we can't let our guard down," Goehkre said.
